Speech Sound Therapy

A speech sound disorder is a communication disorder in which children have persistent difficulty saying words or sounds correctly. Most children make some mistakes as they learn to say new words, but a child who does not say sounds by their expected ages may have a speech sound disorder.

Only a certified speech language pathologist is qualified to provide a differential diagnosis of speech sound disorders. Speech sound disorders include problems with articulation (sound production), phonology (sound patterns), Childhood Apraxia of Speech (deficits of motor planning) and/or may be caused by structural differences (cleft lip/palate) or physiological deficits (tongue thrust, dysarthria).

Language Therapy

A language disorder is a communication disorder in which children have persistent difficulty understanding and/or using language. Most children make some mistakes as they learn the rules of a language, but a child who has persistent difficulty may have a language disorder.

A certified speech language pathologist is qualified to provide a differential diagnosis of language disorders. Language disorders include problems with expressive language (using language to express themselves), receptive language (understanding what others are saying), and pragmatic language (social skills).

Feeding Therapy

A feeding disorder is characterized by problems with sucking, eating from a spoon, chewing, drinking from a cup, or persistent picky eating. Most children show some difficulty as they learn new feeding skills, but a child who demonstrates persistent difficulty with new skills, or has a limited diet may have a feeding disorder.

The SLP may lead or work as part of a feeding team. Other team members may include

  • an occupational therapist,

  • a physical therapist,

  • a physician or nurse,

  • a registered dietitian,

  • a developmental specialist,

  • a social worker, and

  • a lactation consultant.

The team will suggest ways to improve your child’s feeding and swallowing.
